Ice-ing on the Cake
ICE-ING ON THE CAKE is a production of two one-act opera pieces combined to form a cohesive and immersive production. The show combines Bon Appétit by Lee Hoiby, an opera inspired by a Julia Child episode in which she teaches the audience how to bake a chocolate cake, and Craigslistlieder by Gabriel Kahane, a song cycle of actual Craigslist ads set to music. The two pieces are seamlessly weaved together through an original concept and newly written dialogue, where the Julia Child episode is being watched by a woman who is about to dive into Craigslist, reading example posts before she crafts her own narrative for the soon-to-be vacant room in her apartment and the caveats she provides to her potential new roommate. In the end, the Craigslist ad is complete and we return to Julia Child just as the cake comes out of the oven, which is then served to the audience.
